Cultivating the Ideal Mindset for Success: Key Insights from Andy Fell

Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude to all of you who joined us for the BINGO (Banking Industry Networking Group Opportunities) Christmas drinks event. BINGO represents a dynamic community of banking professionals who gather to network, exchange insights and nurture meaningful connections. The evening provided a unique opportunity for attendees to not only enjoy some festive cheer but also to gain valuable knowledge from Andy Fell, Founder of GiFT631 and a renowned motivational coach with three decades of experience in financial services.

During Andy’s talk, he shared personal anecdotes and professional experiences that shaped his remarkable journey. These insights were intertwined with his book, “The Rocking Chair Test: A Step-by-Step Guide to Becoming #Future You.” The book, inspired by Richard Branson’s concept of the “rocking chair test,” challenges individuals to envision their lives from the perspective of their 95-year-old selves. This introspective exercise led Andy to make three pivotal decisions: to achieve more in the coming years than in the past, to pass the rocking chair test, and to depart from the financial services industry!

In Andy’s talk, he shared essential insights for cultivating the ideal mindset for success. His emphasis on systems, prioritization, meditation, transformational goals, and the power of networking provides a comprehensive framework for individuals looking to achieve their personal and professional aspirations in 2024 and beyond.

Success Starts with Systems

According to Andy, success is 95% systems and 5% magic. He emphasized the importance of establishing a personal success system, which starts with a well-defined morning routine. Many successful individuals have established morning rituals, and after giving many of these a try, Andy developed his own. The 4M routine, it involves = movement, mind-cleanse, meditation and Mozart time (thinking). This routine helps him kickstart each day with clarity and focus.

Prioritization and Value

Andy’s approach to prioritization revolves around distinguishing between ” high value quick” and “high value deep” tasks. He believes that a daily measure of success is achieving both types of tasks. By focusing on high-value activities and avoiding low-value distractions, individuals can consistently make progress toward their goals.

Meditation and Reflection

Meditation plays a significant role in Andy’s daily routine. Spending 7-8 minutes in guided meditation allows him to find stillness, hear his own thoughts, and gain clarity. This practice has been instrumental in his journey from a bank manager to a general manager, then entrepreneur. Through stillness, he achieves clarity, leading to innovation and breakthrough success.

Setting Transformational Goals

Andy challenges the conventional idea of SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) and introduces the concept of SMUUT goals = specific, measurable, unachievable (when you set them), unrealistic and timebound – a goal without a deadline is a wish. He advocates setting goals based on opportunity and possibility rather than past achievements. To break down these goals, he employs a 1-3-6 process, with the “1” being the SMUG goal, the “3” being sub-goals, and the “6” being the next best actions. This approach encourages aiming high while taking small, actionable steps.

The Power of Networking and Relationships

Andy Fell’s grandfather taught him that relationships are the foundation of everything. He expressed concern that many people have become complacent about cultivating connections, both within and beyond their organizations. In his view, fostering human connections is essential for personal and professional growth, and those who prioritize these connections will continue to excel in life.

In addition to Andy’s insights, we were thrilled to announce the launch of our new joint program, ‘What Winners Do to Transform Sales.’ Coupled with my upcoming course, ‘Thinking like a Banker – Innovating like a Start-Up,’ focused on financial services disruption, 2024 promises to be a year of significant growth and achievement.

A big thank you to Andy for sharing his holistic approach to success. By drawing from his extensive experience and the wisdom shared in his book, Andy offers valuable guidance for those embarking on their journey to become their best future selves. As we approach the new year, how do you plan to implement these insights into your own life to achieve personal and professional success in 2024?
